Chronic lateral ankle pain occurs when repeated sprained ankles do not completely resolve. This discomfort occurs on the outer portion of the ankle and can be painful when trying to walk or run. The patient experiences pain and laxity in the outer ankle. Ankle sprain will occur after tripping and stepping in a pothole or off the sidewalk.
Previous ankle sprained may evolve into a chronic condition where scarring occurs resulting in decreased function of stability of the outer ankle ligaments.
Symptoms for chronic lateral ankle pain are as follows:
- Difficulty walking on uneven ground or in high heels
- Stiffness in the ankle joint
- Fullness or tightening of the ankle joint
- Tenderness at the outer ankle
- Laxity of the outer ankle joint creating instability
- Clicking or popping tendons of the outer ankle joint
Other conditions may also cause chronic lateral ankle pain such as
- Scarring from repeated ankle surgeries
- Tendinitis or partial tearing of the peroneal tendon
- Dislocation of tendons in the outer ankle
- Fracture of the ankle joint
- Compressed nerves in the outer ankle due to a previous fall or ankle sprain
- Build-up of scar tissue
- Impingement of the ankle joint tissue
- Old Ankle fracture
- Repeated rolling of the ankle
- Severe flatfoot

Over the counter or prescription anti-inflammatory medications designed to reduce the swelling. You should always consult your physician before taking any medication.
- Physical therapy strengthening exercises of the outer ankle ligaments and tendon
- Bracing and orthotic devices like custom orthotics, ankle braces, hinged ankle-foot orthotics,
- Restriction of further ankle joint movement with a cast or fracture boot
